I still feel a child-like wonder every time we step through an ancient Moroccan door – there’s a sense of mystery and intrigue of what lies beyond that rarely disappoints. I’m completely enamoured with tiled riads, their fragrant, light-filled courtyards and the calm sense of belonging that they evoke. Heavenly!
And then there’s the constant surprises in Morocco’s natural beauty and diversity - from expansive coastlines dotted with ancient ramparts and fishing boats, through rich valleys filled with orchards, over rugged and sometimes snow-capped mountains complete with rustic village life, to the stillness and expansive allure of the desert.
The true magic, though, has to be the locals. There’s an inviting sense of community and connection which is central to everyday life here. I love that any greeting is quickly followed by a steaming glass of aromatic mint tea, and there are endless invitations to shared tables, brimming with dishes that have lovingly been prepared with seasonal produce. It’s all about coming together, to share, to eat and to laugh….
So just like that, this magical Kingdom not only captivated me, but stirred up something within. An indescribable, almost unsettling, feeling. How can somewhere so exotically foreign seem so warmly familiar … almost as if it had always been an integral part of me. It’s alluring charms were feeding my soul, and calling me back…
